What is Homelessness? Homelessness refers to the condition whereby a person lacks a regular, safe, and permanent home. It is often caused by poverty, unemployment, mental illness or addiction. The National Alliance to End Homelessness defines homelessness as “the situation where people are without a permanent home or adequate housing and have few, if any resources to acquire safe and affordable housing they need.” How We Got here - The Historical Roots of the American Poverty Problem Today, the United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. However, there are still many people who live in poverty. The U.S. poverty rate is about 15%. This means that about 1 in 7 Americans live below the poverty line and are struggling to meet their basic needs.
